Commercial Deep Sea Fishing Project in Sultanate of Oman

NAFT plan, to operate purse seine fishing vessels, the vessels will be small /medium size industrial fishing vessels and operate in EEZ of Sultanate of Oman.. Total expected catch per season/year will be around 10,000-20,000 tonnes, mainly targeting tuna species, yellow fin tuna, big eye tuna, skip jack tuna and small pelagic spices.

Key features:

Number of fishing vessels: Fishing licenses applied for ten purse seiner vessels, two licenses are already operational, issued by the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries, Sultanate of Oman

Available Fishing Licenses: Approved two deep sea fishing licenses Tuna Purse Seiner Length 30-70 meters to operate in EEZ of Sultanate of Oman.

Type of fishing: Commercial Deep Sea Fishing

Fishing areas: To operate on approx. 3000 Km coastline, Sea of Oman and Arabian Sea EEZ of Sultanate of Oman

Target species: Tuna species: Yellow fin tuna, skip jack tuna and bigeye tuna

Small pelagics: Scad, Sardine, Anchovies, Indian mackerel, Ribbon Fish Trevallies, etc.

Our targeted catch: Approx.10,000-20,000 tonnes per season

Landing ports: Main fish landing ports are Salalah&Duqm Ports in Oman

Our purse seine vessels are fully equipped and have complete chilling and/or freezing facilities on board to preserve catches, state of the art blast freezing equipment.

Fishing method: Our tuna purse seining vessels, a distinction is often made between Fish Aggregation Device (FAD) associated or non-FAD associated fishing. Purse seine vessels encircle free-swimming surface-schooling fish or around a FAD while setting out the net. When the school is captured inside the net, the end of the net is closed and the bottom is pursed. The net is then hauled on board either manually or automatically, depending on vessel size and fish holding capacity.

There is not much known on actual target species, Tuna, sardine and mackerel purse seine fishery for canning purposes. The statistics show that main catches of small pelagic fish by purse seiners are scads, trevallies, sardine, Indian mackerel, etc.

Fishing areas: Small/medium purse seiners (ranging from 100-300 GT) and larger tuna purse seiner fishing vessels (ranging 1000-2000 GT) can be used in the Arabian sea east and south of Oman, while large industrial seiners mostly operate in the south eastern EEZ waters.

Seasonality: Tuna is a seasonal and migratory species. High season for catching tuna in the Arabian Sea from September to April. Peak seasons in the Indian Ocean are from February to March and September-November.. Main seasons for small pelagic  are September-November, and June.

Stock status: Yellow fin tuna large stocks are available in the EEZ of Oman, in Arabian Sea. Others are skip jack tuna, big-eyed tuna or unknown. Fish stock status of small pelagic is often difficult to assess because of the schooling behavior of the fish.
